Fifty years behind the same counter
A G Smith Butchers was started by Tony Smith and has stayed a family shop ever since. Here is how it has grown, told the simple way.
Tony Smith opens the shop
Tony sets up the butcher's shop on Plantation Road in Boreham. Village butchery, done the traditional way, with everything cut and prepared on the premises.
The next generations join
The shop grew into a family business, with Tony's sons, daughter and grandsons working alongside him. The same hands, the same standards, passed down the counter.
Sausages made in the shop
The sausages the shop is known for are still made in-house to its own recipes, rather than bought in. Ask what has gone on the bench that morning.
Hog roasts for events
Alongside the shop, A G Smith is known locally for its hog roasts, brought out for weddings, parties and village events across the area.
Still a proper counter
Over half a century on, it is still a real village butcher: served over the counter, Tuesday to Saturday, by people who know their trade and their customers.
